1 HON. DEWEY C. WHITENTON (RET.) of Bolivar, Tennessee, served as Chancery Court Judge of the Twenty-Fifth Judicial District of Tennessee, which is composed of the counties of Fayette, Hardeman, Lauderdale, McNairy and Tipton.  He began serving in 1976, and served continuously for thirty years until his retirement in 2006.  He has been involved with several hundred mediations and judicial settlement conferences in all types of civil and family disputes.  In his Judicial District, the mediation of family disputes was mandatory, and the District maintained a highly successful ratio of settlements prior to trial.  His civil experience includes torts, contracts, construction, banking, and probate disputes. His Rule 31 Civil Mediation Application is pending and will be granted October 31.              Judge Whitenton was born and raised in Bolivar, Tennessee, and he is a graduate of Central High School.  He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Vanderbilt University and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Vanderbilt University School of Law.  He served six years in the U. S. Army and the Tennessee Army National Guard.  Prior to undertaking his judicial duties, he was engaged in the general practice of law in Bolivar for more than seventeen years, and was also the County Attorney.  He was active with the Tennessee Bar Association, serving as Chair of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and as a member of the House of Delegates.             Judge Whitenton first became a member of the American Bar Association in 1971, and he has been active in the Judicial Division and the National Conference of State Trial Judges for more than twenty-five years.  He has served as Chair of the State Judicial Associations Committee and the Task Force on Sate Judicial Associations.  He has also served as Chair of Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, and the Rural Courts Committee.  He has also been active with several other committees, including Long Range Planning, and Technology.  He is presently Co-Chair of the Membership Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee.  He has previously represented District Nine (North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia) on the Executive Committee.             Judge Whitenton was appointed by the Tennessee State Legislature and the Governor as a member of the Commission on the Uniform Probate Code, to study and make recommendations for changes in the Tennessee probate laws.  He was appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court and served for ten years on the Tennessee Judicial Council.  He has served on the faculty of the Tennessee Judicial Academy, and has attended the National Judicial College and the American Judicial Academy.  He has also received the Twenty Year Outstanding Service Award from West Tennessee Legal Services, Inc.             Judge Whitenton has been involved with the activities of numerous civic and charitable organizations, including the Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, Carl Perkins Center for Domestic and Child Abuse, The Arts Council, and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.  He has served as President, and is a Paul Harris Fellow, of the Bolivar Rotary Club, and he has more than twenty-six years of perfect attendance.  He has also served as President of Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Hardeman County Election Commission.  He was previously Chairman of the Administrative Board and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the First United Methodist Church of Bolivar, and has a been a teacher of the Men’s Bible Class for more than forty-two years.             Judge Whitenton has been married to the former Margaret (Marne) Davis for forty-seven years, and they have three children and five grandchildren.  He enjoys hiking, fishing, travel, cooking and good food.
